Anna was the recipient of our Best Show Award in last year’s Funny Women Awards so a reprise of the lead character, Georgina the Bride, as host of her very own Woman of the Year Awards was bound to be a winning combination. Except she doesn’t get to win and we get the impression that Georgina is bitchily filling in time until another potential husband appears on the horizon.
Four characters compete for the title and the audience decides on the winner with a bit of customary cajoling from the hapless Georgina. This means that the show can end in one of four different ways and, with the Edinburgh audience’s appetite for interaction and improvisation this keeps the format fresh. True fans may choose to see the show more than once and not be disappointed.
The four women competing for the title are a hard-edged Scouse Mumpreneur, a baker with a very secret recipe, a glamorous but deadly foreign correspondent and an activist who is campaigning against marriage. These characters have had an airing before in Anna’s 2014 show, Would like to Thank, but they feel very fresh and vibrant in this format and are darker and more developed comedically.
This is a well-produced and creatively staged Edinburgh show and it’s full of the kind of content so beloved by festival audiences. The filmed elements work well within the narrative and it is a fast-paced hour in a great room which suits the subject matter. This all adds up to another sure fire hit for Anna and I expect to see a touring version very soon. Alternatively, give this woman a television series!
