When I first set up Funny Women 15 years ago there was lots of discussion about how female acts should look and what they should wear on stage. Some of them were told by promoters to ‘dress down’ so that they would be judged on an equal footing with their male contemporaries, or that if they were ‘too glamorous’ they would not be taken seriously as comedians.
A certain Ms Ryan has changed all that. Fashion designers are getting trampled in the rush to dress Katherine for her many television appearances, shows and award ceremonies. She is already a fashion icon with young women wanting to copy her style. Katherine proves that glamour can be a part of your comedy brand and follows in the tradition of late greats like Joan Rivers and Marti Caine who were never without a bit of bling.
In comedy it’s okay to break the rules and subvert the norm with what you wear. Yet, when you’re on stage, attending an industry event or picking up that hard won award it’s important to feel confident in how you present yourself.
I have recently been working with the wonderful Abigail Rebecca Pugh, who’s passion is to help professionals from all walks of life discover their personal style. She has created Dressing with Impact: Learn How Your Personal Image is Key to Your Entrepreneurial Success a complimentary virtual ‘Summit’ which launches on Monday 8th May. This event brings together 26+ experts (including me!) to share our best tips, and discover what messages our clothes send to the world. It was a very revealing experience!
You don’t even need to leave the house to take part. Go to the link here to view a series of interviews where you’ll hear personal, real-life stories about how to dress for success and more. I’m clearly still learning so will be checking out my fellow experts as it’s never too late to change and adapt your style.
