This May Day bank holiday the first Writers of the World Unit Festival at Waterstones Piccadilly, London will be holding a cabaret night!
This is a space where comedy, music, politics and radical free speech meet, the ‘Life is a Cabaret old comrade’ is the finale event of the festival which includes, among others, events on the centenary of the Russian Revolution (as told through graphic novels and poetry), radical Caribbean writers, feminist manifestos and an International Polari salon on representations of identity.
The Cabaret on Monday 1st May is hosted by comedian Ava Vidal, who started out earning a living as a prison officer before turning to stand-up!
The evening also includes up-and-coming British Asian comedian Sadia Azmat, who made it to the 2011 Funny Women Awards finals and has since made her Edinburgh Fringe debut with her show Please Hold – You’re Being Transferred to a UK Based Asian Representative. Sadia has had multiple appearances over BBC radio and has toured both her solo shows.

Vanessa Kisuule is a writer, performer and spoken word artist based in Bristol. She has won several slam titles including most recently, Hammer and Tongue National Slam 2014 and the Nuoryican Poetry Slam in New York. Her debut poetry collection, Joyriding The Storm, was published in 2014 and her first show, Sexy, will premiere at The Camden Roundhouse next month.
The Ukulele Lady and her Boy is musician Jacqui Wicks and poet Ralph Dartford. Based in West Yorkshire, they are founding members of award-winning arts organisation, the Ossett Observer. They publish books, run carnivals, sing songs and take lots of time out for tea and cake. Ralph runs the spoken word collective A Firm of Poets.
Richard Marsh is a poet, playwright and performer. He’s performed all over the country and internationally as far away as Scotland. Plays include Skittles / Love & Sweets (BBC Audio Drama Award, best scripted comedy), Dirty Great Love Story (Fringe First winner, co-written with Katie Bonna). Todd & God is coming this summer, the story of an atheist who starts hearing the voice of God. Awkward.
