Jake (James Young) and Laura (Amy Conachan) are after one thing: empty, late Friday night drunken Tinder sex. But what they end up with is far from meaningless in Johnny McKnight’s smash hit comedy Wendy Hoose
Presented by Soho Theatre, and a collaboration between Scottish theatre companies Birds of Paradise and Random Accomplice, this innovative play is bursting with voices that traverse over a variety of mediums- with audio description, caption and sign language integrated as dry, witty observers guiding us through the night.
The chemistry between Jake and Laura is palpable, and their characters are richly defined and utterly and earnestly believable. We are trapped inside the Wendy Hoose, caught between Young and Conachan as they effortlessly throw McKnight’s fresh, electric and sometimes outrageous dialogue back and forth.
In one short hour McKnight masterfully tackles disability, gender, class and parenthood with grace and style, extracting laughs every step of the way. This is a smart, honest and sassy play that is a commendably brave and exciting take on modern day sex and romance.
Wendy Hoose is on at the Soho Theatre from Tuesday 12th April to Saturday 12th May 2016, 7.30pm. Thursday and Saturday matinees 3pm. £10-£20.
