Since moving to London from Sarnia in Canada in 2008 Katherine Ryan has got a lot done, winning the 2008 Funny Women Awards, solo shows, touring with Peter Andre (kind of) and becoming a mother to an English child. Her new show Kathbum covers both her usual celebrity critiques but now there is more personal material in the mix.
Katherine talks about her home town, apparently the Ontario capital of teen pregnancy and teen suicide, her family and her school. It seems Katherine did not fit in at school or in Sarnia, and that’s ok by her.
In fact Katherine believes she is missing that part of her brain that should make her care about such things. This means that as well as being able to deal with incidents in school, online abuse washes over her. A particularly handy skill when you’re a woman in comedy.
Discussing being single for the first time after a series of long term relationships, Katherine talks about how much she likes being single and getting older. She is an expert at using celebrity culture to sneak in the feminist belief that the personal is political and in Kathbum she demonstrates this in a hilarious, engaging and frank way.
