Beth Vyse’s new show for Edinburgh is called ‘As Funny As Cancer’. This I had to see. Terrible and life-threatening as cancer can be, there’s something about it that really does bring out the sense of humour in people. I watched a preview/work in progress at London’s Museum of Comedy before the show goes up to the Edinburgh Fringe.
An initial warning: when she first comes out on stage, for the love of all that’s holy hide your drink. Without spoiling exactly how, there was half of someone else’s red wine over me within the first 15 seconds. And I don’t for a second expect that bit to be toned down.
The audience is vital to the show, so sit at the front if you want to get involved. You might well see the props on stage as you take your seat. Don’t bother wondering what they’re all for, you will find out.
There are very few topics off-limit for Beth. Her show covers all the bases: sex jokes, slightly racist voices, celebrity impersonations… if you’re not ready to be offended, stay home. And if you’re wearing beige and sitting next to someone drinking Merlot, shuffle down the row a bit.
You can see ‘As Funny As Cancer’ at The Hive (Bunka Room) at 4.20pm, every day from August 6th to 30th, except for the 18th. There is one final London preview at the Camden Comedy Club on the 1st, so get to that if you’re quick.
