The impact that the show ‘Girls’ has had on female comedy in a relatively short space of time is worth commenting on. The Telegraph did just that this week, praising the rise in the number of women making more funny stuff.
‘Girls’ was (apparently) in grave danger of becoming the sole female-led show that people could identify, so it’s nice to see more takes on the complexities of having two X chromosomes.
The article namechecks:
• ‘Broad City‘ – which is also notable for premiering on YouTube
• ‘Playing House‘ – a two-woman take on the old ‘oops, I’m pregnant’ storyline
• ‘Transparent’ – made for Amazon Prime and a Golden Globe winner
• ‘Be Here Now-ish‘ – starring the writers and currently seeking Kickstarter funding
• ‘Awkward Black Girl‘ – another online series that doesn’t quite do what it says on the tin
They all sound pretty different, wouldn’t you agree? We women are very diverse creatures. And the prospect of having more than one show to watch is always appealing. A single series just can’t portray the spectrum of us ladies accurately enough.
