We caught up with Disha Sughand, head of fundraising and marketing for Womankind Worldwide. Here she writes about about our forthcoming event to celebrate the charity's incredible 25th Anniversary.
This year I am delighted to be co-ordinating a number of events celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Womankind Worldwide and our supporters have led the way in events and activities. The latest event to get excited about is ‘The Funny Women Players – A Journey to Enlightenment’ on Tuesday 21st October at the St James’s Theatre in London.
The Funny Women Players, Funny Women's very own fast-paced comedy troupe, will be taking the audience on a 'journey to enlightenment' through comedy improvisation. Proceeds from the event will go to Womankind and tickets are available online, along with all the information about the night. It’s set to be an exciting evening so we would love to see as many of our supporters there as possible.
This event is just one of the ways we’re using the opportunity of our anniversary to showcase our work and that of our partners since the organisation was founded on 8th March 1989, none of which would be possible without our supporters. There’s a lot for us to shout about, from the inspirational stories of our partners to the change in laws that have been passed along the way. And since Sir Alec Reed founded Womankind we’ve changed the lives of over 18 million women.
As we’re now over half way through the celebratory year, there have been a number activities and events so far. In March, our partner Bloomsbury Publishing hosted an International Women's Day book group event, with award-winning author Aminatta Forna joining us for the evening. Many supporters also organised their own book groups across the UK, raising money and awareness for women’s rights in creative ways, including poetry readings and lunches dedicated to inspirational women.
To coincide with our anniversary we also launched the Future Fund for Women. Supporters are becoming Future Fund Challengers to raise money for the fund and we’re showcasing their efforts on our Future Fund website. Challengers have been fundraising in a variety of ways, including shaving their hair off, running an ultra-marathon and doing a skydive.
So this next event from Womankind supporters Funny Women fits in well with the festivities. It will help raise awareness of our work, raise funds for our partners and give everyone attending a fantastic night out. And of course the celebrations won’t stop there. Our supporters will be continuing their amazing work to raise funds and awareness for our partners all the way through to March next year.
