Rachel Mars has always relied on humour. After 32 years of life, she knows that if anything goes wrong she can remedy the situation with a joke. But what would happen if she couldn't fall back on laughter?
Turning the spotlight on the inner workings of comedy, The Way You Tell Them interrogates the desire and – sometimes uncontrollable- compulsion to be funny.
In her latest solo performance, Rachel goes in search of what is beyond the gags, jokes, and pratfalls. Using real-life material, classic oral sex jokes and a wolf suit she weaves a thoughtful and provocative story that questions how we use and abuse humour.
You can see The Way You Tell Them as part of the Beyond The Joke festival at the Camden People's Theatre and at LOCO and Underwire's Working Women day. Then Rachel will be joined on stage by Sara Pascoe, Caroline Quentin, Bobby Baker, and our very own Lynne Parker, for a discussion by top comedy talent whose work draws upon the issues raised in the performance. The panel will be asked to ponder on the idea of comedy at home, comedy within families, as well as questioning whether confessional humour is something that is particularly popular with women and the possibilities and problems this can bring.
