Madeleine is a writer-turned-performer who has recently scooped a string of competition wins including the prestigious So You Think You’re Funny 2025. She’s been praised for her “distinctive worldview” (Chortle), “tight and gag-packed” writing (Bruce Dessau), and a “knack for blending offbeat observations with pacey, unexpected punchlines” (The List). She lives in London.
How did you get into stand-up?
I had a dream about doing stand-up and, after a lifetime of shying away from the spotlight, decided to give it a go, expecting to try it once and crawl away with my tail between my legs. Instead – completely against my expectations – I had fun and it sort of spiralled out of control from there.
What is it like being a finalist in the 2025 Funny Women Awards?
The other finalists are incredible and the heats and semi-finals were packed with talent, so it’s an honour.
Why is Funny Women important to you?
It’s one of a range of things that have made the circuit a more welcoming place for women, which I’m very thankful for.
Tell us about your comedy style?
Some people have described it as “laconic” “deadpan” “surreal” and “no-nonsense.” Is that true? No idea! Trying to describe your style feels like trying to taste the inside of your own mouth. But I’m going to go with cheeky.
What’s next for you?
Writing scripts, gigging and working on my Edinburgh debut.
Who are your favourite Funny Women?
I know this is a cop-out but there are just too many to name!
What do you love about stand up?
It’s a high wire act. You’re never in complete control – and that’s exciting.
