Funny Women

Kate Hammer

Kate Hammer is an anemic Canadian comedian and writer living in Glasgow, and is a regular host and weekend performer at clubs in Scotland. She has performed on Just for Laughs, Latitude Festival, Kelburn Garden Party, Late N Live, PopMontreal, and is a finalist for the Funny Women competition 2025, as well as being a semi-finalist for the 2022LGBTQ and Leicester Square New Comedian of the Year competitions. She is the resident host and co-producer of the queer comedy show All Mouth and has opened for Sam Lake and Mark Nelson. Kate is high energy, wears high-waisted trousers, and always stays true to her goat farming heritage.

How did you get into stand-up?

I started in comedy because I have a life-long goal to be the funniest person in my family, and the competition is hot. I fell in love with stand-up in Montreal thanks to my wonderful friend LP, and then swam over to Scotland where I’ve been honing my craft for the last few years. And the level of talent up here is so wildly high, it’s great to be a part of the scene and also keeps me on my toes to make sure I’m writing the best jokes possible.

What is it like being a finalist in the 2025 Funny Women Awards?

Incredible. It’s so validating to be among wildly funny women and I hope to destroy them one by one by hilarious emotional warfare. I’m really excited to meet everyone because the best thing about this competition is how much we want to raise each other up and support women in comedy in general.

Why is Funny Women important to you?

This is an incredible recognition and opportunity which I don’t take lightly. Going to the Big Smoke to expand my comedy audience and network is exactly what I need, and I wouldn’t be able to do that without Funny Women. The best part is the round trip train which I will use to prepare myself for the comedy wiles of so many talented people, and then process the win/loss against my new friends/enemies.

Tell us about your comedy style.

People have called me ‘high-energy’, ‘a tornado of charm and joy’, and ‘clownishly graphic’, but I think this is just normal behaviour.

What’s next for you?

Lunch. And then a stunning Fringe debut next year.

Who are your favourite Funny Women?

Every Scottish woman on the scene is nailing it. But to give a sampling of the wild talent, we have Kathleen Hughes, Maddie Fernando, Eva Peroni, Iryna Gil, and Ifrah Qureshi. Amanda Dwyer and Susan Riddell run Material Girl which is a kickass monthly show (and podcast), and I always scream with delight when I see I’m on a bill with Ruth Hunter. There are so many funny women off stage as well and I love working with Rae Brogan as a co-producer for All Mouth Comedy (a monthly queer comedy show) who is a hilarious comedian and writer and person – maybe even friend? Rae, let me know!

What do you love about stand up?

Every show is unrepeatable: that audience on that night in that certain mood means everything is going to play slightly differently and I love the challenge of figuring out exactly how I’m going to win them over. It usually involves doing the splits. Did I mention I can do the splits? It’s awesome. Links to social media handles please.
