It’s no surprise Louise Young (@LouiseYoung_) is nominated for the Best Newcomer award this Edinburgh Fringe, since she has an absolute belter (as they say in the north east) of a debut hour. Despite the show’s title, Young’s style of comedy is calmly confident, sprinkled with quick witted gags that are so strong, she appears more an experienced pro than a newcomer debuting.
In this traditional stand up show, Young is able to skilfully weave lighter jokes in with heavier topics, creating a narrative that keeps us on our toes, but simultaneously allows us to completely trust her to guide us through it. Her talented writing skills shine through as she describes the trials and tribulations of her experience growing up working class in Newcastle as a half Geordie half Turkish lesbian.
Young handles tricky topics in her set, such as addiction, getting arrested in her youth, enduring underwhelming mental health courses, amongst other anecdotes about sticky situations she’d get into after taking things ‘too far’, with an ease that makes you feel incredibly comfortable. See her while you can!
