I don’t know about you but with the infamous April showers being delightfully persistent last month, I am ready to sail away blissfully to sunnier plains, and what better way to do that than booking in some fantastic comedy*. Funny Women are here to brighten your day with some fresh comedy recommendations for the month of May. With three whole bank holidays this month, there is ample time for laughs, and we’ve got all the best recommendations right here. You’re most welcome.

*I guess booking an easyjet holiday is another option. Maybe.

1. TOURS

JAYDE ADAMS: MEN, I CAN SAVE YOU

You may know Jayde Adams from one of her many TV accolades, including Strictly Come Dancing, Roast Battle, and host of Crazy Delicious, to name but a few. We know her from being the Funny Women Award Winner 2014, (or her origin story?) Adams is world class. After streaming to 156 million views worldwide, Adams is touring her show across the UK.

RIA LINA: WIP

Tuesday 2nd May @ 6:00 PM, Top Secret Comedy Club

With her stand up debut on Mock the Week, Ria Lina solidified herself as a familiar face across the UK stand up circuit with ease. Her comedy is high energy, fast paced, smart and fantastically funny. Fun fact: she also has a PHD in virology. Catch her WIP at Top Secret Comedy Club.

CATHERINE BOHART: WIP

Wednesday 24th May @ 6:00 PM, Top Secret Comedy Club

After Catherine Bohart’s 2019 debut Edinburgh show Immaculate went on to be streamed as an Amazon Special, she’s back this year with a fresh new WIP. Bohart has appeared on multiple telly spots including Roast Battle, 8 Out of 10 Cats and Mock the Week. A top tier pro with a show you don’t want to miss.

HANNAH BYCZKOWSKI: WIP

Thursday 11th May @ 6:00 PM, Top Secret Comedy Club

If you have been invested in UK pop culture in the last 6 months, you will have heard everyone discussing the ruthless politics of the show The Traitors – Hannah not only won this show, but she’s also got a bloomin’ WIP at Top Secret. Warm, naturally funny and endearingly honest, this will be a gig not to miss.

ALEXANDRA HADDOW: WIP

Thursday 11th May @ 9:00 PM, 2Northdown

Alexandra Haddow is definitely, one to watch. Best New Show nominee (Leicester Comedy Festival), tour support for Frankie Boyle, Haddow’s comedy covers relationships, sex kids and dancing. Not one to miss.

BELLA HULL AND SARAH ROBERTS: WIP

Tuesday 30th May @ 6:00 PM, Top Secret Comedy Club

A split bill from 2 fantastically funny women. Hilariously self-absorbed, to quote her, Sarah Roberts is a “very brave” comedian who covers hard hitting topics “but in a like, lmfao way”. Bella Hull is back after debuting her show ‘Babycakes’ at Edinburgh 2022, which she then took to Soho Theatre. She has also appeared on telly shows, including Comedy Central Live and The Stand Up Sketch Show. Ones to watch.

This show is rather up our street… a bill featuring many fantastic acts who just so happen to be women, including Harriet Dyer, Louise Young (both on Comedy Central Live), Allyson June Smith (Jason Manford tour support), Sally-Anne Hayward and Lou Conran (both Sarah Millican tour support).

STAND UP FOR NERVE TUMOURS UK COMEDY FUNDRAISER

Wednesday 17th May @ 7:00 PM, Union Chapel

This comedy fundraiser is jam packed with fantastic comic talent – including 2021 Funny Women Award Winner Lara Ricote, as well as Jessica Fostekew, Laura Lexx, Celya AB (FW finalist xxx), as well as Daniel Kitson, Paul Foot, William Stone and Dan Tiernan. We’re definitely excited for this one.

COMEDY X EUROVISION

Wednesday 10th May @ 7:00 PM, The Clapham Grand

Are you excited for Eurovision? Well why not extend the celebrations with this gig? Hosted by Chloe Petts, Sam Lake and Rajiv Karia, this one off gig is packed with some big name funny women, including: Flo and Joan, Shelf, Siblings, Seayonce, and special guest Katie Pritchard, expect silly comedy songs and romps. With other brilliant acts including String V Spitta (double act Kiel Smith Byone and Ed Macarthur), Jazz Emu, Huge Davies, Toussaint Douglas, Phil Dunning, Foxdog Studios and Fjord.

Comedy Shorts Award Entry Requirements

The deadline for registration for the Comedy Shorts Award has passed.

Funny Women NextUp…Comedy Shorts Award

Are you a budding Director? Producer? Screenwriter? Are you collaborating with friends to make a funny video? Then we are looking for YOU!

If you have a short film or sketch that you think is hilarious, then enter your work for our Comedy Shorts Award to be in with a chance of winning some life-changing support and mentoring from comedy professionals.

WHAT KIND OF FILM ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

A 1- 6 minute film that can take the form of anything comical. It’s a great opportunity to show us your creative flair and have fun!

WHO CAN ENTER?

This award is open to all women filmmakers and content developers. The film must be an original narrative created, produced and devised by a woman, or women, although male cast and crew members are allowed.

ARE THERE ANY ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR MY FILM?

Yes – we require all films to be 6 minutes or under, to be entirely original dialogue, to not feature brand logos and most importantly, to only use music with the written consent of the performer and/or publisher either personally or via the PRS system https://www.prsformusic.com/ .

WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH MY FILM?

We will broadcast selected entries on our Funny Women YouTube channel and social media (so keep an eye out) and the top 10 finalists’ films will also hosted on a dedicated Funny Women Comedy Shorts Awards page on our website. We will also broadcast the final 3 entries as part of the grand final night.

HOW IS IT JUDGED?

Films are judged for production, concept, delivery/performance, creativity, writing and overall funniness. The top 10 films are then viewed by an independent judging panel of top television and film industry professionals who will choose one overall winner and two runners up. The final three will be invited to attend the grand final in London on the 23rd September.
