Known for her unique off-beat comedy, 2020 Funny Women Awards runner-up Eryn Tett can be difficult to categorise. Forever unpredictable, Eryn’s incisive joke writing mixes with an expansive sense of absurdism to cause chaos in even the savviest of venues. But with no clear path to follow, Eryn has often wondered what her journey through the comedy world would entail. She always gets the same advice: ‘find your audience.’ So now she will. In the most efficient way possible. For Eryn’s debut show she is collecting important data in search of ‘her audience.’ Expect wordplay, odd observations, and surreal storytelling set to a charmingly uncomfortable rhythm, we caught up with Eryn to talk about her entirely literal approach to the sage advice: ‘find your audience.’
Funny Women: Are you excited to debut at Edinburgh Fringe?
Eryn Tett: Yes, I’m excited and nervous and terrified. One straight after the other and
sometimes all at once
FW: Have you got any tips for comedians going up to the festival for the first time?
ET: I’m not totally sure what my tips for others would be! For myself it’s definitely, get
some sleep, try to eat some vegetables, and remember to have fun.
FW: Your comedy show is jam-packed with one-liner jokes, do you think building
an hour was more of a challenge due to this style?
ET: Yes! I think building an hour with mostly short jokes was definitely very daunting to
me. I’m not sure I would have attempted a show if I hadn’t come up with this format I
have!
In my clubs sets, I kind of thrive on the chaos of jumping from topic to topic and short
joke to short joke. But I think that can be quite relentless for an hour! So I had to
think of another way.
I’m not someone who usually likes a narrative or tells stories. For this show, the
‘narrative’ is over the course of all the shows instead of within the show. I’ve been
collecting data, which builds the story with each performance as I bring all of my
‘audience’ together.
FW: Who are the funny women are you hoping to see in Edinburgh this year?
ET: I’m definitely going to catch Bexie Archer (part of Your Dad’s Mum) in Tonight at the
Social Club and Anna Thomas who is part of this year’s Best in Class.
