The Funny Women Awards 2022 are open! Since launching in 2003 the Awards have added exciting new categories, making them even more accessible to funny women across the world. In celebration we talked to our Awards producers, today we’re talking to our Digital Creative Strategist Mariana Feijó!
Funny Women: Tell us about the Awards category you produce.
Mariana Feijó: I produce the Comedy Shorts Award. It’s my second time doing it and I’m excited to do it all over again! In this category, we’re looking for comedic short films lasting anywhere between one to six minutes. If you have a super cinematic idea with high production values or have written a sketch you can film with the help of some friends, we want you to submit it to us! We are above all, searching for work that can make us laugh, and we think you have what it takes!
FW: What is your favourite thing about producing this category?
MF: I love being able to go into someone’s creative brain – metaphorically, not literally! I think what film offers us visually, makes that process way easier. Some of you have beautiful brains!
FW: Is there anything specific you look for in a Comedy Shorts Award winner?
MF: The only thing we’re looking for is a comedic idea, explored and developed with the moving image in mind. Anyone who can deliver that has all the chances of being the winner.
FW: Any advice for those thinking of entering?
MF: Don’t second guess yourself, the quality of the gear you have to record your idea, or the lack of access to exciting locations. Past winners have found creative ways of using footage with less quality and making it seem like an intentional choice, and there’s been a runner-up who recorded everything from her room. As long as you have a good idea, the rest will fall into place.
