2009 Funny Women Awards winner London Hughes has scored a sitcom pilot deal with America’s NBC network! Hughes will star in, co-executive produce and co-write the currently untitled sitcom with Larry Wilmore, formerly of the Daily Show.
In the show, Hughes will play London Jones, who has moved to th US to seek love and success after a break up. This echoes Hughes’ own experience travelling to American to seek success outside the UK.
The comedian tweeted: “The news is finally out!!!!! I’m soo happy!!! someone tell my mum please because I’m pretty sure she still thinks I’m in America looking for a job!!!!”
Followed by: “I just want to stress to you, that I’ve been doing comedy in the U.K. for 10 years, this is not an overnight success, and I had to leave my own country for this to happen for me. Please dream big, but always trust your gut. You got this.”
Hughes has been vocal about her experiences as a young black woman working in the UK, a fact not lost on her fans as one responded to her tweet: “You’ve been discussing the realities of being a black woman comic in the UK for years and sadly everything you said has been proven true. Sucks for us that we have to lose such talent but congratulations, you really do deserve it. Can’t wait to watch the new show!”
Wilmore said: “I’m beyond thrilled to be working with such an exciting fresh voice as London Hughes in her dream come true. Rarely does a star burst on the scene as instantly bright as she has.”
We’re delighted for our 2009 Funny Women Award winner, good luck London!
