NATYS 2019 winner Njambi McGrath is returning to Edinburgh with her new show Accidental Coconut, in which she examines the effects of Brexit and nostalgia for the British Empire. We talked to Njambi about her show, self discipline and African women getting a chance to share their perspective…
Funny Women: What is your show Accidental Coconut about?
Njambi McGrath: Accidental Coconut is a show about identity. Just like Brexit has thrown British people into an identity crisis so am I. Once a superpower busting in imperial glory, Britain sought power and influence. I am the product of that imperial conquest but from the other side of the empire. Both have an impact on the identity of everyone involved.
FW: Do you find comedy a great tool for presenting difficult subjects to an audience?
NM: Comedy is a great medium of expression. African women rarely have a medium through which they can give an alternative perspective from the stereotypical narrative offered by mainstream outlets. It’s a platform through which I can express joys, passion and frustration. When you have something to say there are people always willing to listen.
FW: This year you won the NATYS, put together an Edinburgh show and have been writing your book Through the Leopard’s Gaze, how do you fit it all in?
NM: I try to be very disciplined and organise my time. I divide my year in months so that I can work on different projects at different times. Fortunately, my book was finished last year but have been working on another writing project.
FW: You’ve taken a few shows to Edinburgh now, have you got any tips for people bringing their debut to the Fringe?
NG: Have realistic expectations. Perform to your best ability. Remember every experience is enriching however negative or positive.
FW: Which funny women are you hoping to see at the Fringe this year?
NM: I’m hoping to see as many BAME shows as possible starting with FOC it up.
