Maisie Adam has had an absolutely blinding start to her comedy career, winning national competition So You Think You’re Funny 2017 and getting to the 2017 Funny Women Awards final before triumphing this year at the Amused Moose Awards, it’s fair to say this comedian hit the ground running. It’s no surprise Maisie won these two competitions, she has a stage presence and ease beyond her years, she’s the full comedy package, jokes, storytelling and physical humour. She’s also a hard worker and it’s a pleasure to see it pay off.
The show title is inspired by Maisie’s epilepsy, which was diagnosed at 14 as juvenile myoclonic epilepsy which gives her ‘vague’ episodes. However young Maisie was dedicated to leading a normal teenage life, she cracks out relatable material that isn’t groundbreaking but still entertaining. Detailing life in her Yorkshire village of Pannal as a tall teen who enjoyed sharing whatever alcoholic beverage she and her mates had managed to snaffle from their parent’s cupboards.
While there are a few strong themes in Vague, Maisie’s epilepsy, the quirks of a Yorkshire village’s inhabitants and some great material on being tall, there isn’t much of a unifying arch, bar chronology. What Vague seems to be missing is a director’s touch, while Maisie is a consummate storyteller the show could do with a little tightening and editing. However, considering the comedian has made the leap from doing tight fives on the open mic circuit to a debut hour at the Fringe that is selling out in the space of a year, Maisie’s obviously doing something right and will go far.
