Irish comic Alison Spittle is shooting her new sitcom Nowhere Fast in Dublin for RTE2. Nowhere Fast is all about the ‘boomerang generation’ with the leading character, twenty-something Angela, returning to her small hometown in Ireland after struggling to get her career in the media going.
Alison told RTE Entertainment: “I’m proud and excited to be making a show about the midlands in all its glory” which apparently means “drinking in fields and mates having meltdowns, with mammy at home to pick up the pieces.”
The Irish comedian also revealed she never imagined she’d make a sitcom: “It’s a lot like Laser hair removal – something I never saw myself doing, a thing for people more glamorous and organised than myself, and to be honest I’ve no idea how it’s done. Now it’s happening, I wake up some mornings and maybe ten minutes go by before I remember ‘hey you’re making a TV show!'”
When it comes to new material for her comedy Alison doesn’t have to look too far: “My biggest influence would be my family. The things they say – I just nick it off them. I plagiarize my family the whole time”
Nowhere Fast also stars Moone Boy’s Clare Monnelly and Genevieve Hulme Beaman as Angela’s best friends, Mary and Brid. Angela’s family in the show includes Cathy Belton and Mark Doherty.
Producer Ailish McElmeel said: “I’m delighted to bring another strong female comedy to Irish audiences. Alison’s voice is truly fresh and fantastically funny.”
Director Simon Gibney describes the show as: “a heartfelt series that touches tragedy and comedy in equal measures… Such a stellar cast and a top drawer crew, coupled with Alison’s honest voice and intimate writing, has made this an extraordinary project to bring from script to screen.”
