I’ve been inspired to write this because I’ve been chosen to do a reading at the upcoming launch of Kamihikouki Magazine’s seventh issue. (I guess it’s unlikely I’ll see many/any of you there, but come if you can.)
The theme of the issue is ‘tea’. So, the theme of this post is ‘tea’ too.
A fortnight or so ago, I went to an art gallery: the AIDA Gallery in Nakatsu.
I don’t know about you, but I think that’s a pretty cool logo.
The theme was nothing to do with tea – it was all spooky in the run-up to Halloween. An exhibition about witches, and yarn, and scary movies filmed on phones in black and white. A teddy bear hanging… that sort of perfectly normal thing.
But I did get served a nice cuppa while I was there. It looked like this.
Oh, what’s that perching on the edge of my saucer? A severed finger covered in blood, you say? Delightful. I’ll give it a nibble. Hopefully the fingernails are clean…
The full menu had other options: cocktails or a soft drink, with a jelly eyeball floating on top. I’ve made the photo a little bigger here, so you can see the ‘finger’ and ‘eye’ illustrations for each drink.
The menu gives away that the suspicious-looking appendage with my tea is, in fact, a cookie. The disgustingly-coloured fingernail is a nut, and the blood is fruity jam.
Surprisingly good, once you get over the weirdness and try one. Not so ideal for dunking. It’s at times like this that I miss Hobnobs more than I probably should.
I didn’t sample the eyeball. Oof, that feels really strange to type out. I’m not even at the gallery any more and it’s still making me shudder to think about.
I guess I won’t be using the phrase ‘not my cup of tea’ for a while now, just in case.
