As far as I am aware this is Holly Burn’s first outing as herself rather than in character. It is a pleasing departure because she is an accomplished actor and used to the discipline of character roles and scripts. Stand up is more exposing and the need to deconstruct your own life to write and perform a show has sent lesser mortals running for the hills!
The point is that Holly knows she is ‘special’ and this show is all about getting everyone else to catch on. Her publicity says: “The loud voice of Generation Y wants it all, without doing anything to get it” and the portrayal of brash self- entitlement is countered by some real depth and pathos.
Holly is eminently watchable and I suspect this show will move and grow as she gains momentum during her run at the Edinburgh Fringe. The autobiographical thread takes you on a journey and the writing is strong and cohesive in contrast to her mad, bad and unpredictable style of delivery.
Holly is not frightened of improvising which is why this show may end up as something completely different by the end of August. It is great that she is doing it without the distraction of costume changes and props. This is what the Fringe is all about and I am confident that good things will come out of this show for the multi-talented Ms Burn.
