An Edinburgh Fringe favourite, Lou Sanders is back at the festival this year with her new show What’s That Lady Doing? Lou will be exploring the themes of madness, creativity and originality. Taking into consideration her belief that children are unabashedly themselves, spontaneous, free and creative, Lou wonders what makes us begin to change and adhere to social norms and people pleasing behaviour…

Before she takes the show across the border though she’ll be aboard the Good Ship Benefit as part of our Edinburgh Preview festival! We had a little chat with Lou ahead of her preview on Monday 11th July.

Funny Women: What inspired your new show What’s That Lady Doing?

Lou Sanders: Just a lady at a gig asking that very question. What IS that lady doing??

FW: Is ‘What’s that lady doing?’ a phrase you often overhear?

LS: Not really, although now it’s the title of my show yes, a little more. Or at least I think other people will be hearing a lot more of it if you know what I mean – she says, cheeky winkin’!

FW: Your press release says there might be beat poetry, is there beat poetry and why?!

LS: Hell yeah there’s beat poetry! Always stick some BP (that’s what we call it in the business), always stick some BP in your 5th hour.

FW: You’re often described as a cult favourite, why do you think that is?

<span”>LS: A nice way of saying I’m not as successful as I should be by now?

FW: What’s next for you?

LS: Projects. I’ve got my balls to the walls projects wise.

FW: Who are your favourite funny women?

LS: So many. Roisin Conaty is not just funny on stage but in real life it’s just unreal how funny she is funny all of the time. So many stories, man. Kathryn Ryan’s stand up is just superb. Lazy Susan are so innovative and brilliant. Dianne Morgan is excellent. Rose Matefeo’s stuff is very interesting and funny – I loved her show. And she wrote a sketch show I watched online and it’s flipping so good and she’s like 24 or something! Increds. I love Annie McGrath too – subtle brilliance mixed with great lines. And Mae Martin is so real on stage I love her. Nina Conti is a master and Aisling Bea and Sara Pascoe are a joy to watch and work with.

Lou Sanders will be at the Pleasance Dome 3rd – 16th and 18th-28th August. For more information and tickets click here!

You can catch What’s That Lady Doing on Monday 11th July at 7.00pm on the Good Ship Benefit. For tickets click here!
