If you have been enjoying the first BBC Two series of Mum then you will be pleased to know that the channel has ordered a second series of the sitcom, which charts the life of a recently widowed woman.
Lesley Manville stars as Cathy, who we met in the first episode at her late husband’s funeral, the sitcom tells the story of how she moves on after the death of her husband, with Cathy and her family facing major and minor events over the year – ending the series on New Year’s Eve. The BBC said: “It’s the story of a woman finding who she is again and maybe finding love second time around.”
We are delighted to see a sitcom led by an older woman, comedy commissioner Shane Allen commented: “This well-loved and warm-hearted show has been blessed with that rare alchemy of great concept, beautiful writing and terrific cast. Series two gives us a more positive Cathy at the core of this world as she moves forward from the lost love of Series 1, all laced with deftly drawn characters and comedy sparkle.”
The cast of series one are all expected to return for the second series, including potential love interest Michael, Cathy’s son Jason and his girlfriend Kelly, Cathy’s brother and sister in law the insufferable Pauline as well as Cathy’s parents in Law.
Executive producer Kenton Allen says: “Shane Allen’s creative leadership on Mum had been impeccable from day one and a confident recommission for a second series by Shane and Charlotte Moore is another signal that they are a world class organisation and one of the very best places to produce original comedy on the planet. And they told me on my birthday. Best present ever!”
We can’t wait to see what’s in store for Cathy…
The new series will be filmed and broadcast next year!
