January. January. What is it? I mean yes it is a month, a period of time we all have to go through to move into this brand new year ahead. Christ, we are in 2016! How did this happen? I AM NOT READY…panic!
To me the word January makes me think of reflection, strapping up my boots and getting ready to go out into this world with all my new year’s resolutions memorised on how to be a better “me”. Exhausting. It is also a month of, I have to say, recovery after a somewhat boozy Christmas. I might be going teetotal.
But this January something else is in the air. There is a breeze coming in from the east of Haggerston, birds are twittering and things seem… lighter? Even though today I stepped in a massive dog poo on my way to work, I continue to smile and brace myself because I know something is going to happen. I can feel the suspense. A ticking bomb is going to go off at the end of this month! A festival like no other is taking place at the generous headquarters of the Proud Archivist where Waiting for the Call – the improvised musical resides. Tiny Women Brains aka the Feminist Comedy Festival is going to kick off with a loud boom on Friday 29th January!
A weekend full of workshops, Q&As and evening performances featuring some of our best female comedians, improvisers and stand ups. Get industry advice from casting director Sarah Hughes and agent Alexandra Mclean-Williams. Or do a workshop in something you’ve never tried before, like clowning or musical improv with Sarah Spencer. Enhance your creativity with Clem Billoud. Learn to write for TV and Radio with Sue Teddern and Rosy Fordham. Try stand up with Lynne Parker. Learn to write sketches with Kieran Boyd and Gemma Arrowsmith.
You can also see performances by Emma Sidi, Alison Thea-Skot, The Maydays, Kitten Killers, Abigail Burdess, Waiting for the Call’s Notflix, Charlotte Gittins, Briony Redman… the list goes on and on…
This is going to be brilliant and we want YOU to be involved. As we are a growing community we want to give everyone the opportunity to meet, make connections and laugh out loud under the same roof! We have been very inspired by the generosity and dedication of Funny Women, especially as we got through to the semi-finals of last years Funny Women Awards. We want to follow by Funny Women’s leading example and reach out to you. So please join us in making this weekend truly spectacular. Let’s shake up our New Year’s resolution, the silly pressures we put on ourselves and have a great time together celebrating comedy. Let’s start this year with a loud boom! See you there!
