There is something especially magical about the sight and sound of a theatre orchestra warming up for the overture to a show. Jonathan Church’s Mack and Mabel goes one step further by placing a glorious 14 piece orchestra not just on stage but in full view towering high above the stage, giving the audience a real opportunity to enjoy the full effect of Jerry Herman’s toe tapping musical score.

Mack and Mabel is a big inventive production with the added appeal of the Silver screen. If you like Michael Ball you will love Mack and Mabel! Michael Ball gives a star performance as director Mack Sennett, pioneer and king of the silent movies; the man who gave the world Charlie Chaplin and made film audiences laugh worldwide at the Keystone Cops; gasp at damsels tied to train tracks; sigh at glamorous Bathing Beauties and gave the world Mabel Norman, who in reality he transformed from lowly waitress to movie queen.

The show is based on the real life love affair between Mack Sennett and Mabel Norman. Their relationship is tellingly encapsulated in a prophetic serenade I Won’t Send You Roses sung beautifully by Michael Ball. Their relationship is volatile, funny and complex.

This production does not shy away from the darker tones in this story, but there are also big upbeat company numbers, with fabulous choreography by Stephen Mear. We are treated to slap stick pie in the face comedy and exuberant Keystone Cops. The outstanding production numbers include Tap Your Troubles Away executed superbly by a strong and talented cast.

Anna-Jane Casey shines as Lottie, leading the company in the breath taking tap routine. Rebecca LaChance makes an enchanting Mabel. As Mack Sennett, Michael Ball is sensational, charming, funny, gruff, and poignant. His voice is an absolute joy! This is a ‘must see musical’ that should tap tap tap it’s way into the West End!
