Find me the ‘Old News of the Week Klaxon’ – several new studies report that women are more likely to fall in love with a man who makes them laugh. But that it doesn’t work the other way around. Please, not this again.
The University of Kansas has found that the blokes with the jokes are the ones women seem to prefer. And if a couple laughs together, they stay together. The power of a funny woman on a man, however, appears to be lacking. Like we haven’t heard this old load of hogwash before. Yawn. Anything else on telly?
It’s important to make a distinction here, though: these weren’t studies on how funny women are in general. And the findings include ‘no link’ (positive or negative) between humour and intelligence.
So if you tell jokes, it doesn’t mean that you’re not clever or not funny. Just that the man you’re trying to seduce is statistically likely more interested in your cleavage than your comedy. Or so it would seem.
For just how long are we going to be subjected to pointless research into how well men can laugh a woman into bed? I think it’s about time someone did a study on how much we laugh once we see a guy naked. Hmm. Maybe that’s the kind of joke that puts men off.
And I may not have a sample size of hundreds to analyse, but I find that guys who are interested in me definitely giggle more. I could be wearing a turtle neck and they’ll still laugh at my jokes. (Nobody has ever – deliberately or accidentally – laughed in the direction of my boobs, for fear of a good slap. I think I understand why men don’t like that joke now…)
I think what we can take away from this research is that we shouldn’t take anything away from this research. If you make people laugh, good for you. Toning down the comedy because a man doesn’t fancy you would be nonsensical.
