Well, I suppose you’d expect him to. After all, he has just directed the movie Trainwreck with the very funny Amy Schumer. And his previous film credits include Bridesmaids, which many people see as a turning point for movies led by a strong female cast.
Judd’s gone on record as saying “thank god” we have female talents like Amy and Girls writer Lena Dunham. He came out with this in an interview with Vulture magazine. It wasn’t the only comment he made about female comedy, either.
“Whatever they want to do, they can do, because they have people like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Lena Dunham, Mindy Kaling, and Amy Schumer and can realise this is possible. I don’t think there were as many of those people to look up to in the past.”
Isn’t that awesome?
Netflix and other on-demand programming has opened up even more opportunities for women to get their faces and voices in front of the public. More channels and 24-hour schedules can only mean more shows. Which means more screen time for women. As Judd says, “…they can’t fill all these channels with just white dudes.” And that’s coming from a ‘white dude’.
A man who actively wants to write confident, complex female characters and put them front and centre is one to admire. You can see from Judd’s more recent work that women have a bigger part to play.
We’re all looking forward to the next Judd Apatow movie, whatever it may be. Conner4Real is one of the comedy works in production, with the formidable cast including Sarah Silverman and Imogen Poots.
