Sorry about the pun, but it was very windy. My own fringe hasn’t quite recovered from the blustery weather that kicked off the Brighton Fringe this month.
We spent most of our Bank Holiday weekend at the One Church in the centre of Brighton, putting ladies through their comedy paces as part of our first Brighton Comedy Academy. If you missed it, you really did miss out!

You’ll have seen the list of workshops here on our website, but what you didn’t see was the fits of giggles on both days. Lisa Armytage had us literally rolling on the floor for voice and breathing exercises on Saturday, and Crooked Pieces walked us through the finer points of writing a joke. We also took notes from Sharon Wright, who thankfully isn’t into strenuous exercise and just talked us through writing great personal websites.
Our final session on the Saturday was with Laura Lexx, who improved our improv immensely. Stay tuned for that one, as we might have some video of that session coming soon.
On Sunday, we swapped our funny women between standing up with Lynne Parker and running around the room with Lorna Shaw from That Pair. If that wasn’t enough, Rebecca Fenton was standing by to give her tips on comedy writing and techniques.
The weekend was topped off with brave stand-up performances from our academy grads. Some of our lovely ladies were trying out jokes for the first time, and we applaud you all for giving it a go.
Brighton, we love you and we’ll be back soon – the 2015 Funny Women Awards heat at Komedia is on 30th May.
If you want to improve your comedy skills we are holding our Stand Up to Stand Out workshop this Saturday 9th May at St James Theatre, for more information click here!
