In a scenario reflective of the current vogue for women to shine in political circles during the run up to the forthcoming general election, it was a clean sweep for the female acts competing in the final of the 2015 Musical Comedy Awards on Friday.
Despite tough competition from some more than worthy male contenders, Rebecca Humphries sung her way to victory winning over the audience and entrancing a panel of industry judges (including our very own founder and CEO Lynne Parker) with her show stopping Disney tribute.
Rebecca channelled magical powers and sheer professionalism even though the web is already awash with similar parodies. Taking it live clearly paid off – she already has a sold out Ed Fringe show under her belt from last year – and ensured her the double winning both the audience vote and the main prize.
Best Newcomer went to Faye Treacy, a classically trained musician with a bucket full of comedic talent. She chose her instrument well – the trombone is often used for comical effect in the world of television and film soundtrack. It literally played into Faye’s hands along with some vegetables which didn’t strike as good a note as the real thing. Original, engaging and clearly comfortable in front of a large audience Faye is one to watch for the future.
Second and joint third places went to DW, Baron Fingolfin and Tom Bazely respectively. This went to prove that the standard was so high overall four out of the six acts competing got placed.
The flag waving for female comedy continued into the celebratory second half of the show when Rachel Parris headlined. Echoing some of the Disney themes that Rebecca employed in her award winning performance, Rachel manages to add a dark sinister comedy edge that we recognised when she was runner up in the 2010 Funny Women Awards. Those present on Friday will never mistake the word ‘hen do’ for ‘hindu’ again…
