Tess Waters: Every WOMANz

Tessa Waters is WOMANz! She is. I can’t tell you how that came to be without spoiling almost the entire show, but she definitely is.

What I can tell you is that, as I said to camera on the way out: “I don’t think I’ve ever been so mesmerised by another woman’s butt before.” That may end up in the trailer, so keep your eyes peeled.

WOMANz is an interesting combination of comedy, dance, ‘art’, some sort of highly conceptual interpretive theatre and a bit of mime. It’s split into sections, helped along by costume changes and props – and even some narration booming from the ceiling, which was a nice touch.

It was through the combination of one particularly nice pair of pants and very hypnotic wiggling that the above comment was made. I always admire women who really go for the outfit – Lynn Ruth Miller stripping was something I won’t forget – and WOMANz has some excellent taste in undergarments.

The version of this show we saw was a preview for Edinburgh, something which Tessa went to great pains to repeatedly point out. I don’t know how ‘ready’ it is, which is another reason not to give too much of it away. But she did completely break one woman in the front row down into an uncontrollably giggling mess of hair and white wine. I think it’s pretty much there.

There only one more thing I can say, which I wish I’d said at the end. Near to the close of the show there’s one particularly topical joke thrown in as an aside. It didn’t get much of a laugh from our audience at the time – but Tessa, if you’re reading this, I’d say keep it in. I think most people were just giggling too much at the joke before, and it was a nice drop-in line.

At the 2014 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, WOMANz will be running at the Underbelly from Thursday 31st July  – Sunday 24th August. You can book on the Fringe website here.
