Ricky Gervais's Channel 4 show 'Derek' is back on our screens. We chatted to 'Derek' star and funny woman Kerry Godliman about the show's reception, spoilers and the kind of women she'd like to see in the media.
Funny Women: Kerry, you said in the Guardian that your comedy is quite self-deprecating, a trait you don’t see so much in male comedians. Why do you think that is?
Kerry Godliman: I don't think I said that. I can think of loads of self deprecating male comedians!
FW: ‘Derek’ is seen as quite a controversial show, what do you think of the reaction it gets?
KG: It does seem to be quite a polarising show. I think that's ok though. People have strong feelings about it either way. I've seen no ambivalence towards it. It's completely unique.
FW: What’s in store for Hannah in the new series of ‘Derek’?
KG: No spoilers I'm afraid!
FW: Do you think Ricky Gervais writes good female characters for comedy?
KG: I think Ricky has a good eye for female characters that are not typically portrayed in TV. Hannah is a beautiful part to play, and the type of woman we've all met, and don't see enough of in the media. Selfless, hardworking, caring and as hard as nails.
FW: Who are your favourite women comedians?
KG: I'm loving Amy Schumer at the moment. Roisin Conaty, Zoe Lyons, Jen Brister, Bridget Christie, Aisling Bea, Katherine Ryan, Sarah Kendall…there's a lot of them. And there's no excuse for us not seeing more of them on the Telly box!
