We know being a teenage girl in a society that glorifies external appearance, celebrity culture and early sexualisation is tough. Not surprisingly these ideals encourage a range of disturbing behavioural responses including eating disorders, self harming, binge-drinking and promiscuity. Not to mention low confidence, low self esteem, low body image and depressed aspirations.
Girls Out Loud is an award winning social enterprise and charity set up in 2010 on a mission to change this landscape and raise the aspirations of teenage girls throughout the UK. We do this by creating and facilitating early intervention programmes in schools and communities focussed on building confidence, emotional resilience, positive body image and an empowering mindset.
At the core of our philosophy is to introduce the girls to real role models. Women from all walks of life, comfortable in their own skin and successful in a diverse range of businesses and professions. In 2010 we launched our 12 month mentoring programme BIG SISTER and this has fast become our core product connecting amazing women to girls aged 14-16. We have been overwhelmed at the steady stream of high calibre of women putting their hands up to volunteer to work with us and our momentum continues to grow.
