Nominations have been pouring in since Spring for our inaugural Funny Women Best Show Award and we have managed to whittle down the top three shortlisted shows!
A big thank you to all that have taken part – we were heartened by the sheer amount of great shows out there. A special mention must go to the four highly talented and energetic performers of Pinkatoe Theatre who massively entertained with their show A Womb With A View.
The overall winner will be announced at the Funny Women Awards Charity Final at the Leicester Square Theatre on Monday 23rd September 2013, alongside the Main, Variety, Comedy Writing and Real Funny Women Awards. The winner will receive £500 courtesy of WeGotTickets and invited to a VIP drinks reception at The Groucho Club.
So, without further ado, the three shortlisted shows are (drumroll…):
American stand-up Abigoliah has the rare gift of managing to be confrontational but utterly charming at the same time. Not a show for the squeamish – in fact, one audience member even fainted!
Edinburgh Festival Fringe audience review: "Brilliant – shocking – outrageous – massively funny, hugely enjoyable show. Abigoliah is always excellent value as a gutsy, no-holds-barred comedienne, and she's really upped the anti this year – and that's without the fire-eating, giant needles and what she can do with a lightbulb! Love this lady, would never miss her show, highly recommended."
Hope & Gloria
by Alex Maher
It's a testament to Alex Maher's skill as an actress that she keeps the audience enthralled throughout her one woman show. A clever concept, well executed, with lot's of laughs and great audience participation.
Edinburgh Festival Fringe audience review:"This show starts like a trojan horse with a one-woman army of Alex! The show is a fantastic character comedy performance taking the audience through a session of therapy with tender moments of ass-clenching. No really, there is ass-clenching. Why don't you believe me? See if: You like audience participation, a laser guided therapist in your face, animal noises, raunchy knicker removal and finding out you're going to prison. Don't see if: You're boring, dull, a bit incontinent."
Mum, Can you wipe my bum?
Vicky Arlidge's confident and slick Edinburgh debut garnered great audience reaction, and after seeing her carefully crafted songs in this years Funny Women Awards, we are very much inclined to agree!
Edinburgh Festival Fringe audience review: "Vicky's debut here in Edinburgh went brilliantly – perfect comic timing, slick material and lots of laughs at her musical genius! Perfect for parents who want a laugh at the nightmares that child-rearing can bring and great for musos who appreciate her clever use of piano and ukelele, not to mention one or two other surprise items! A sort of Victoria Wood meets Sarah Millican or Bill Bailey and great on relationship issues! 'Football Widow' a favourite! Go and see her!"
