Having been a finalist in the 2004 Funny Women Awards, we always knew Bridget Christie was destined for big things, and we weren’t wrong. Nine years later, she has several successful Edinburgh shows under her belt (including last year’s critically acclaimed War Donkey) and has just started her own radio series on BBC Radio 4.
Having realised last year that misogyny – like shiny leggings – had made a comeback, Bridget Christie Minds The Gap sees Bridget tackle a host of issues surrounding the big F word (we mean feminism, of course). Featuring Fred MacAuley playing a variety of male characters, episode one took us right to the beginning of Bridget’s journey, when a bad smell in the women’s section of a bookshop made her realize that something had to be done about the fight for equality. Why is feminism still a dirty word, and why on earth have Bic designed a pen just for women?
We sent some of the Funny Women team down to the recording of the show’s first episode – featuring the Bronte sisters, cooking for Kirsty Allsop’s husband and a very unhelpful bookshop assistant, it had the audience laughing out loud throughout. We loved it, and can’t wait to hear more. We’ll avoid spoiling it for those of you who haven’t heard it yet, but if you didn’t get to tune in don’t worry – it’s still available online and there are three more episodes to go!
