There was a great atmosphere in The Bloomsbury Theatre, London, on Saturday night as The Musical Comedy Awards celebrated five years of promoting musical comedy with a line-up of the best acts to come through their doors.
Hosts Horse and Louis's boundless enthusiasm and energy was infectious, and it was clear we were in for a good night.Winners of last years Awards Jollyboat had the audience in fits with their fantastically inventive Pirate versions of pop songs. Although they could maybe learn a thing or two from Horse and Louis about on-stage banter, we very much look forward to seeing how these talented brothers evolve.
Adams and Rea were up next with their drly witty and surreal songs-a genuinely mesmerising stage presence that we could have listened to all night! (We knew Sarah Adams was a good'un when she won our first ever Funny Women Awards!)
The fabulous Sooz Kempner (we're not being biased just because she won the Funny Women Variety Award, she really is fabulous) took a break from touring with the Wizard of Oz to delight the audience with her darkly humourous ditties. Star of Radio 4's The Now Show Mitch Benn finished off the first half with his trademark satirical songs.
The second half featured the very promising newcomers Fair and Square, ever quick and hilarious Adam Kay as Amateur Transplants, this years MCA winner Rob Carter with his imaginging of a 'Gangsta' romance, and Jay Foreman's technical musical comedy that played well with the students in the audience with a tale about stealing food from flatmates.
The Musical Comedy Awards are accepting entries for 2013, so if you've got a funny song or two up your sleeve why not enter by visiting their website HERE.
