Bizarre. Hilarious. Heartwarming.
Sunlight is one of those films where you sit there and wonder, “How did someone even come up with this?” in the best way.
When a monkey-suited woman catches a man hanging from a ceiling fan, she steals the man, his van, and his heart. The pair form an unexpected bond over their lost senses of self, and perhaps their slight mental instability. I couldn’t have guessed in my wildest dreams where the plot would take me, but I left with my eyes welling up and a warm heart.
Co-written by Nina Conti and Shenoah Allen, the script was simultaneously punchy, funny, tragic, and bizarre. The chemistry between Conti and Allen as comedians, creatives, and co-leads was electric. Nina’s artistry as a puppeteer was hilarious, using her (or, better yet, Monkey’s) body language to perfectly illustrate how the audience feels when Allen’s character, Roy, describes what he needs from their adventure together.
There were points throughout the film where I couldn’t fathom the duo emerging unscathed (or rather, slightly scathed), and yet, they always did, and it was always hilarious. Every character served a purpose, and each was uniquely funny in their own way.
Sunlight is a must-watch and a should-be classic.

You can watch Sunlight in UK cinemas from 17 October 2025. You can find showtimes here.
