2021 Funny Women Awards runner-up Bronwyn Sweeney’s debut Off-Brand is inspired by her 13 years in advertising, Sweeney can sell anything, but when it comes to self-branding she has no idea.
For Sweeney, the issue of not knowing how to sell herself popped up when she tried to use dating apps. So, armed not with the slick PowerPoint presentation you might expect from a former ad exec, but a scruffy flipchart, Sweeney takes us through the basics of advertising and how she could apply these to herself.
An incredibly likeable comic, third culture kid Sweeney has packed a lot into her 37 years, which appears to make it hard for her to pinpoint which aspect she should focus on for the show. Sweeney has gone down the traditional debut route and is taking the opportunity to introduce herself, but breezes past quite a few episodes I’d have liked to hear more about – particularly her stint in Atlanta studying advertising whilst speaking in an entirely different accent from her own.
Clearly, there is lots more to unpack and I look forward to seeing more from Sweeney as she leaves advertising behind and establishes herself as a comedian.
