2009 Funny Women Awards winner London Hughes and Robin Thede are set to star in a remake of the American sitcom Perfect Strangers, to be written and executive produced by Thede with HBO Max.
Perfect Strangers ran from 1986 to 1993, the show starred Bronson Pinchot as Balki Bartokomous from the fictional Eastern European island of Mypos and Mark Linn-Baker an American from the Mid-West, a pair of cousins who find themselves in an ‘odd couple’ relationship.
In the multi-cam reboot, perfect strangers Deja (Thede) and Poppy (Hughes) are surprised to discover that they are half-siblings when they both inherit a one-bedroom apartment above a trap yoga studio in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Polar opposites, they must learn how to live and work together.
Hughes tweeted: “I don’t think the world is ready for this. It’s the fact that they’re remaking a show about two white dudes, and making it about two black women, and I get to star in it, AND my character is British, AND i get to work with @robinthede who is also writing it!!”
Thede tweeted: “So excited to explore the modern story of two Black women (half-sisters!) from different countries who are three-dimensional, hilarious and real! I couldn’t ask for a better partners in the BRILLIANT @TheLondonHughes and my @warnerbros and @hbomax family!”
