This year we may be locked in but when it comes to International Women’s Day we are not locked out! In fact this year Funny Women’s International Women’s Day is set to be our most international ever with shows beaming into our Twitch stream from across the globe on Saturday 6th March via our event Funny Women Around The World. Here’s just a taste of what the Funny Women team will be getting up to…
We’ll be travelling across the equator to our Funny Women chapter in Melbourne, Australia with comedian Justin Sless for a debate on whether laughter is the best medicine. Justine promises: “Saturday will be great because we have a global phenomena of women from countless countries being unashamedly funny! We #choosetochallenge the idea that women should be seen and not heard – we are unapologetically LOUD and HERLARIOUS! From Australia to Amsterdam and everywhere in between – start giggling – the revolution will not be televised – because it will be on Zoom and Twitch and we ARE THE REVOLUTION!”
Zooming across the pond to the good ol’ USA Robin Golinski will be checking in on eight different American comedians to find out what they’ve been up to. Robin is all about the action plans as we will also be visiting Boston to examine the power of humous: “Instead of bemoaning the plight of the earth, we women have been planning, building and collaborating across the world to bring 12 hours of joy, inclusivity and laughter – doesn’t that sound better? Join us this Saturday, March 6th.”
You can’t go globetrotting without picking up some new phrases, but what’s it like to perform comedy using your second language? Erin Crouch (USA/Germany), Amanda Urban (Germany), Soness Stevens (USA/Japan) and Mariana Feijó (Portugal/UK) will be discussing this, in English! Erin says: “…comedians from all over the world will have a chance to learn and grow in their craft as well as have a wonderful time.”
Closer to home, we will be in bonny Scotland where they’re always ‘doon for a laugh’, Glasgow producer Angela Legg says: “I’m excited to be part of something that is bringing people together, for the chance to see performers who I otherwise might not have encountered, and to allow the Glasgow acts I’ve recruited to share their talent with new audiences!”
Getting back to our roots Funny Women Brighton Nights producer Kate Stone is putting on a classic showcase featuring Funny Women Awards alumni Sooz Kempner, Eryn Tett, Katie Green, Mary O’Connell and Sarah Keyworth. Kate says: “I can’t wait to finally be putting on a Funny Women event with some of the best talent on the comedy scene today.”
With more pit stops scheduled in Singapore, Holland, Canada and more we’ve got International Women’s Day covered!
