Dead Pixels is back for a second series on E4. The gamers are still gaming and feeding their shared obsession with Kingdom Scrolls. In fact, we catch them for a momentous occasion as the Kingdom Scrolls expansion pack is here, what will the new quest be? To Meg, Nicky and Usman’s disappointment (or heartbreak) the game has been commercialised to attract new young players who just don’t understand how the game is supposed to be played.
Expert as they are at the Kingdom Scrolls, these gamers see real life as an annoying side quest they do only to keep body and soul together in order to occupy their gaming chairs. They do not seem to know how life is supposed to be played and resist the guidance of flatmate Alison, played by Charlotte Ritchie.
It’s worth noting is that for too long women in comedies have been relied upon to play the adopted mum, to disapprove of capers and roll their eyes in order to amplify the hilarious hijinks our leading cheeky chappies have got themselves into this time. Which is why in this new series of Dead Pixels it’s so refreshing to see perfectly normal, sensible, non-bedsore addled Alison can mess up too, in spite of her healthy diet, regular walks and podcast subscriptions.
The comedy is very evenly spread between the characters, though do look out for Meg (Alexa Davies) having a scene in episode two that contains what I am going to call… slosh humour, which will no doubt stay with you.
Tightly packed with great lines, bleak humour that stops short of being excruciating and a hint of a will they won’t they storyline, this new series of Dead Pixels looks set to be even better than the first.
A double bill premiere of Dead Pixels airs at 10pm tonight (26th January) then the full series will be available to binge-watch on All 4 after transmission.
