She might be living the high life in America right now, but the UK is making it clear we want London back! 2009 Funny Women Awards winner London Hughes has been shortlisted in The Times Breakthrough Award category in the South Bank Sky Arts Awards 2020.

London is in good company, her fellow nominees are; Jess Gillam (classical music), Paris Fitzpatrick (dance), Waad Al-Kateab (film), Candice Carty-Williams (literature), Rowan Pierce (opera), Beabadoobee (pop), Miriam-Teak Lee (theatre), Dafne Keen (TV drama) and Michael Armitage (visual art).

The ceremony will be different from last year in order to make it COVID compliant, as the organisers stated: “Having faced one of their toughest years ever, a host of talent from across the arts industry is set to be celebrated next month at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards. Now in its 24th year, the annual ceremony will take place next month at the London Coliseum in a new, socially distanced format.”

The awards host Melvyn Bragg noted that: “This year’s awards will inevitably be a very different sort of event for very different circumstances, but nonetheless will be an inspiring and uplifting celebration of the remarkable talent and strength of many artists at the peak of their powers. The diverse and eclectic list of nominees in every category proves that there is much to enjoy in the Arts – even in the toughest of times.”

Last week it was announced that London’s Edinburgh Fringe hit show To Catch A Dick was to be streamed as a worldwide Netflix special and before that London revealed she was to co-host a Netflix show with Fortune Feimster and David Spade.

The winners of the South Bank Awards will be revealed on Freeview channel Sky Arts at 8pm on Sunday 20th December.
