The deadline for the 2020 Funny Women Stage Awards has passed, but there is still time to enter the Comedy Shorts Awards! Funny Women is proud to introduce you to our 2020 Funny Women Comedy Shorts Award producer Emily O’Neill!

When I was asked to produce the 2020 Funny Women Comedy Shorts Awards, I jumped at the chance. I’ve worked with the Funny Women Team for nearly two years and have been involved in bringing the HERlarious brand to corporate clients as well as being part of the production of the 2019 Funny Women Awards Grand Final, but this was a new opportunity for me; something to get my teeth into, stretch my skills with and add to the ol’ CV (if they’re even still a thing?!)

My childhood comedy memories are of watching sketches on TV such as The Fast Show and Harry Enfield and Chums with my dad. Caroline Aherne portraying Poula Fisch (“Scorchio!”) and Kathy Burke’s Waynetta Slob were an absolute revelation to my 12-year-old self – and still are, to be honest. I loved the breakneck speed of the sketches and how you’d still be laughing at one whilst another one started.

I think the current UK-wide lockdown can provide us with opportunities, focusing on something creative can offer a little bit of light in the midst of these tough times for many of us.

Entering the Comedy Shorts Award could be that creative project! If you’ve been working with friends to make a funny video, or if you’re a budding director, producer or screenwriter, then this could be your chance to win some potentially life-changing guidance and mentoring from comedy professionals. Don’t let lockdown dampen your creativity – just because you can’t film your video in the ‘normal’ way, maybe look to another angle; how about an animated video, perhaps?

Don’t worry if your video or sketch isn’t as polished as you’d like it to be. Don’t worry if you think it’s not what we’re after. Just grab that opportunity and go for it!

The deadline for registration for the Comedy Shorts Award is May 30th. Register here!
