Actor and rapper Awkwafina (Nora Lum) became the first actor of East Asian descent to win in the Golden Globes Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical category. Awkwafina was awarded for her role in Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, she has earned recognition for her acting skills in Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians.
Upon accepting the award Awkwafina said: “If I fall upon hard times, I can sell this, so that’s good,” before thanking The Farewell’s Director Lulu Wang and dedicating the award to her father: “I’d like to dedicate this award to my dad, Wally, I told you I’d get a job, Dad.”
Phoebe Waller-Bridge continued her winning streak into the new year, winning two awards for Fleabag in both the Best TV Series – Comedy or Musical category and Best Actress in a TV Series – Comedy or Musical category. Waller-Bridge referred to President Obama’s recent inclusion of Fleabag on a rundown of his favourite TV shows in 2019: “I’d like to thank Obama for putting us on his list. As some of you may know, he’s always been on mine. If you don’t get that joke, please watch season one of Fleabag really, really quickly.”
