In these odd times when politics, if not human existence, seems to have jumped the shark, it’s hard to know what direction comedy should be going in. While a lot of comedy shows I attended at the Fringe addressed feminism and LGBTQ+ issues, none really tackled the current political climate that is creating these feminist and LGBTQ+ problems. By contrast Jena Friedman’s Miscarriage of Justice is all about politics today, even though she claims to mostly watch sports now due to the news being so bleak nowadays.
It’s pretty understandable that some comedians are stepping back from satire and political content, it all seems to wild right now it’s hard to know how to write a joke about it. However Friedman has written an hour that is wise, dark and funny without decending into any jokes about Trump’s looks. Which is not to say anyone is safe, not even your favourite true crime podcast.
If you are at the Fringe right now you should make time to go and see Friedman’s show, while she might currently be performing to an audience that predominantly agrees with her but she is adding an important voice to political comedy today.
