It was refreshing to see a performer leisurely arriving to her own show, while the audience queued up in an orderly fashion. Phoebe Robinson is developing her hour to sell to the likes of Netflix or HBO, and the Edinburgh Fringe is just a step within that. How cool!
Phoebe tells us about the time she spent with Michelle Obama on her book tour and what it’s like for a black woman to be let in into the first black First Lady day-to-day. She tells us about her politician brother and her white, British boyfriend, who sneakily moved in, quite like the white British colonisers of yesteryear. There’s even some musings about the way straight people see anal, surprisingly brought about by the movie The Kingsman – NOTE: It is not a romcom, even if Colin Firth is one of the main characters.
Some of the jokes had been written the day before and all of it worked, even if it might have used some tightening. Phoebe Robinson is a calm performer, who’s clearly experienced and delivers her material in a paced rhythm, with long expositions, and multiple beats. Can’t wait to see the finished product on a cable or streaming channel near me.
