Zoë Coombs Marr: Bossy Bottom

Zoë Coombs Marr made a successful career out of being a white man. After years of beating cishet men at their own game, she comes back as herself, a queer woman, with a lot to unpack.

In a super high energy show, with a lot of twists and turns, Zoë tells us why she started performing as a man, why she gave up on stand up, and why she’s now back to it. She cushions it all by telling us little bits about her family life, her parents and her partner, that are cunningly silly.

She tells us this show is not like your regular Edinburgh show. There’s no message, no political statement, but she’s betrayed by the fact she is a queer woman, living in a world that doesn’t always cater to us, making that fact, in itself, a political message. It’s a political message delivered through the form of a comedy show, well constructed, following all the rules – the rule of three is seen all the way throughout and the well-sprinkled callbacks are aplenty.

There is a message, but it’s delivered with so much silliness, format deconstruction, non-stop gimmicks and explosive surprises, you can’t stop but to laugh out loud through it all. In my book, that’s the best way to deliver messages, by making the receivers believe they’re just at a comedy show and hopefully leave with new ideas they can take into the world.
