This year we have not one, not two but three producers for the 2019 Funny Women Writing Award. Funny Women editor Kate Stone is joined by writer, producer Dan Page and scripted comedy development producer Janet Awe. We are on the hunt for scripts from female or female-identifying scriptwriters with a real flair for comedy narrative and the ability to put together a laugh-out-loud joke on paper.
Scripted comedy development producer Janet Awe has worked with writers on their TV or film scripts as well as on Sky comedy’s commissioning team and indies such as Talkback. Janet is passionate about finding new talent and set up an initiative with the National Film and Television School, to give up-and-coming writers and producers the chance of a commission for Sky Arts’ ‘Urban Myths’ strand. Her resulting programme, Bleak House Guest, stars Stephen Mangan, Ian Hart and Monica Dolan and gave 20 other people their first TV credit in their role. Janet says: “I’m delighted to be working on the Funny Women writing award, for the second year. I realise how difficult it can be to get heard and to break into the media industry, so I’m proud to support an organisation and initiative that encourages, promotes and helps nurture new and up-and-coming talent, especially voices that are underrepresented.”
Dan Page runs comedy script consultancy Why did the Chicken and has contributed to topical BBC shows News Quiz, Breaking the News and Newsjack. He is an SRA award-winning Producer and created new sci-tech-comedy podcast History Makers. Dan says: “I’m honoured to be part of the 2019 Writing Award and can’t wait to read your scripts. For me, the winning script will shine a light on a corner of the human experience in a fresh and funny way.”
Kate Stone is an award-winning scriptwriter who has edited the Funny Women site for five years, “We’ve had some fantastic scripts come through the Funny Women Writing Award in the past, so I’m excited to see what this year brings. It’s a pleasure to be involved in getting new comedy voices out there.”
