The shortlist for the 99 Club’s Female & Non-Binary Comedy Bursary 2019 has been announced and we’re delighted to see some familiar names on the list! 2017 Funny Women Awards Regional Finalist Helen Bauer, Yuriko Kotani, 2015 finalist Sophie Duker, Janine Harouni and Emily Woods have all made the shortlist. The 99 Club said that the “quality of all entries was very high”.
They will perform in a live show on Tuesday 30th April before finding out which two will receive an award of £500 to help towards the cost of taking a show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Last year’s winners Sarah Keyworth and Catherine Bohart will also perform as MC and headliner respectively.
Helen Bauer’s Edinburgh show is called Little Miss Baby Angel Face and it about taking a small situation, blowing it up, then getting upset that it’s out of her control.
Yuriko Kotani‘s Somosomo will see Yuriko talk about walking the tightrope of cultural differences as she embraces her individuality.
Sophie Duker will be taking Venus to the Fringe, a silly, sexy, savage stand-up from a girl who’s definitely not a goddess. In her hotly anticipated full-fat woke debut hour Sophie takes her audience on an unconventional journey of self-discovery.
Janine Harouni’s show is called Stand Up With Janine Harouni (Please Remain Seated) about standing up for what you believe in, even if you have to do it really nicely.
Emily Woods has an as yet untitled show that will address moving across the world aged 18 and how she uses CityMapper…
The panel of judges will include Hollie Ebdon (Ebdon Management), Steve Bennett (Chortle), Hannah Martin (PBJ Management), Bruce Dessau (Evening Standard), James Woroniecki (Creative Director of The 99 Club) and 2015 Funn Women Awards winner Desiree Burch.
