The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has named comedy queen Carol Burnett as the recipient of the first-ever Golden Globe television special achievement award. The star has won five Golden Globes over her career among other awards, in 2007 Time magazine named The Carol Burnett Show which ran for 11 years, as one of the 100 Best Television Shows of All Time. The show won 25 Emmy Awards and when its 50th-anniversary show aired on CBS it scored high ratings, showing the public’s love of The Carol Burnett Show had not waned in 50 years.
Named after its first recipient, The Carole Burnett Award is the TV equivalent of the Globes’ film-focused Cecil B. DeMille Award, which also carries the name of its first recipient, director DeMille. Carole Burnett will accept the award on 6th January at the Golden Globes Awards ceremony at the Beverly Hilton.
“For more than 50 years, comedy trailblazer Carol Burnett has been breaking barriers while making us laugh,” said HFPA President Meher Tatna. “She was the first woman to host a variety sketch show, The Carol Burnett Show. She was also the first woman to win both the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and Kennedy Center Honors. And now we add another first to her running list: the first recipient – and namesake – of the new Golden Globe top honor for achievement in television, the Carol Burnett Award. We are profoundly grateful for her contributions to the entertainment industry and honored to celebrate her legacy forever at the Golden Globes.”
