2013 Funny Women Awards finalist Bisha K Ali recently relocated to LA to join the writing team of the Four Weddings And A Funeral remake. Bisha joins a team that Mindy Kaling described in a tweet as “all diverse and unique” before using the hashtag #RepresentationMatters, in response to writer Amanda Idoko’s social media campaign called #ShowUsYourRoom to celebrate diversity and expose lack of diversity in Hollywood.
Bisha has enjoyed some fantastic achievements recently, being selected for BAFTA’s Elevate programme, getting a pilot, Book Club, optioned with production company Tiger Aspect and writing for a new comedy-drama for Netflix, Sex Education.
The Four Weddings and A Funeral remake will be streamed on Hulu and the leads will be played by an African-American woman and a British Pakistani man. Mindy Kaling has stressed that this is not simply: “an adaptation telling the same story”. Richard Curtis will executive produce. Kaling added: “What I love about the movie is the rapport between the friends, the Richard Curtis tone, the relatability of weddings, and seeing the heartbreak of one of the friends dying and the group rally for each other.”
